My name is Phillip Anthony Taylor.I built my first surfboard in the winter of 1996. I shape them, paint them, glass them, and sand them. I outsource no processes as I would have it no other way. I build surfboards from all materials including and not limit to polyurethane, EPS, epoxy and polyester. My fin system of choice is Futures. It is the only fin system I use as I feel it is the best fin system on the planet next to glass-ons or the single fin box. My surfboards are completely handcrafted. I am a self taught board builder and have also had the opportunity to work under and to learn from some very skilled and reputable craftsmen Over the past 18 years I have created a very unique process to which I build surfboards.. My methods are completely unique and a result of the path of exploration which I have chosen. For each surfer there is a unique formula. The goal is to find that formula and create that unique tool for that surfer to use to ride waves. This is achieved through a relationship where communication between builder and surfer is key.
In an industry where artist compete with machines and glassers are ghost artist, where profit supersedes passion and the importance of the ride has been lost in competitive efforts to build the strongest and lightest surfboards. In an industry where artist are working to find innovative ways to spend less time creating and ingaged within the process. I am completely content with spending most of my time creating what I refer to as "vehicles of art". Not necessarily "vehicles of art" on a purely aesthetic approach but in the practice of riding waves. I build surfboards because I love surfing, I do not surf because I love building surfboards. Both artistic practices inspire each other and I grow as a result of it and the result is Phil Taylor Handcrafted Surfboards.
Art is an exercise. It is an involvement of oneself within the process. It is as much the exploration as it is the discovery.
